The Basque Region of France

When we were asked to cat-sit in the Basque Region of France, we had no idea what would be in store for us.  We had been in France on several occasions, but this area of France was unknown to us.  Only through Home Exchange could we have the opportunity to "live" and experience life the way it is lived and experienced by the local people.

Bayonne is the administrative center of the Basque region

The architecture with it half-timber construction is reminiscent to the Alsace area

But the language and culture of the Basques is unique

The scenery is mostly rural and breathtaking

Biarritz is the tourist center and well worth a visit

  1. Great post! I love the pictures that you took from your home swap experience. My last home swap vacation in Paris was through www.RoofSwap.com It is a definite travel experience that more travelers need to experience at least once in a lifetime. Not only do you save on accommodations, food, and transportation, but you experience a culture that you may not find if you was accommodated by a hotel. If you have a home, defintely try a swap.

  3. Thank you for your comments. They are much appreciated. For some reason people get very protective of their homes when discussing the idea - But they fail to see that the situation is reciprocal: both parties open their homes and expect that they will be well cared for.

The Affordable Travel Club is another economical way to visit other countries. The idea is that for $20 a night one will host or be hosted and stay for a maximum of 4 days. In exchange the host will provide a breakfast and spend at least an hour with his/her guests and show them around the community.

    Thanks again.
